Artistic Biography
Paula Schildhauer Dickey was born in Wisconsin, majored in painting at Lawrence University and received her Master of Liberal Arts degree from Alaska Pacific University. After moving to Alaska in 1971, weaving studies led to sculptural fiber constructions. In 1988, she represented the United States at the 5th Internationales Tapisserie Symposium in Graz, Austria, where she exhibited and also completed a fiber piece for the Raiffeisenhof collection. Dickey was head of the art program at Alaska Pacific University 1983-1992. She has been on the art faculty for UAA/KPC in Homer from 1993-2007.
Currently, Paula and her husband, Brad, are active in the Percent for Art Program statewide. They have completed twenty Percent for Art commissions and numerous other public and private commissions. Solo shows include the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Kenai Peninsula College, Alaska Pacific University, Lawrence University (Wisconsin), Mantanuska-Susitsna College, Bunnell Street Gallery, Nobles County Art Center (Minnesota), Fine Arts Consultants of the Southwest (Houston, Texas), and others. She has exhibited in many juried shows including seven All Alaska Juried Exhibition (award), eight Earth, Fire and Fiber (Juror’s Choice), Accessories for Interiors (Seattle), etc. Dickey’s work is in state, municipal, museum, corporate, university, and private collections plus three Alaska State Ferry Collections. She works out of her Seabreeze Studio in Homer.
